Who It Is Not For: Honest Fit Statements and AI Answers

Short answer: a fit statement is a short, factual passage that says who a product or service is for, who it is not for and why. Pages that include one give AI assistants and search engines clear text to quote when someone asks which option suits a particular need, and they help human readers qualify themselves before they contact you. Write the statement in plain words, base it on facts you can support, keep it near the top of the relevant page and review it when the product changes. You will lose some unsuitable enquiries and gain trust.

Most business websites describe who they help in broad, flattering terms: “for everyone who wants to grow”. That is easy to write and almost useless to a reader who is comparing options, and to an AI assistant that has to summarise the page in two sentences. A clear statement of fit and non-fit is more helpful, and it is one of the simplest improvements to a product or service page.

What a fit statement is

A fit statement answers three questions in plain language. Who is this for? Who is it not for? What should a reader consider instead if they are in the second group? It does not need to be long. Two to five sentences or a short list are enough.

It is different from a testimonial, a slogan or a list of benefits. It does not try to persuade. It sets expectations. That is why it works: readers sense the difference between a page that tries to sell to everyone and one that tells them honestly whether they belong. It also protects you from customers who would be disappointed, leave bad reviews or need a refund, which are costs that no marketing page should hide.

Why it matters for AI answers

People increasingly ask assistants questions such as “which tool is best for a small shop with no developer” or “is this service suitable for a large team”. An assistant builds an answer from the pages it can read and from what others say about you. If your page says only that you are “for everyone”, the assistant has nothing specific to quote, and it may describe you in a vague way or choose a competitor whose page is clearer.

A fit statement gives it a direct, quotable passage that matches the shape of the question. It also reduces the chance of being recommended for the wrong use, which can lead to complaints that start with “the assistant said it would do this”. No one can control exactly what an AI answer says, but clear source text improves the odds. As with all AI-search work, treat it as a way of being understood correctly, not a trick for guaranteed mentions.

What to include

Good fit statements are specific and checkable. Think in terms of size, needs, skills, budget and situation.

Use words that a customer would use, not internal labels. “Teams that need approval from a client before publishing” is clearer than “enterprise workflow users”.

Examples of the pattern

Here are two invented examples that show the shape. They are not claims about any real product.

Example one, a bookkeeping service: “This service suits sole traders and small companies with up to a few dozen transactions a week who want regular, predictable support. It is not designed for businesses that need audit work, complex multi-country tax or in-house payroll for large teams. If you are in that group, look for a larger firm with specialist departments.”

Example two, a language course: “This course is for adults who already know the basics and want to speak with more confidence at work. It is not for complete beginners or for exam preparation, which need a different approach. Beginners should start with a foundation course first.”

Each example names the audience, the exclusions and the alternative, and neither promises results. That is the standard to aim for.

Where to put it

Place the statement where a reader will see it before deciding: near the top of the product or service page, in a clear section with a heading such as “Who this is for”. For longer articles and comparison pages, repeat a shorter version at the start. Use a heading that matches how people ask, because headings help both readers and retrieval systems find the passage.

Our article on definition sentences for AI answers shows how to write a clear first sentence for a page, and a fit statement works well directly after it.

A short process for writing one

You can draft a first version in under an hour with a small group of people who talk to customers.

  1. List your last twenty enquiries or sales conversations, and mark the ones that went well and the ones that went badly.
  2. Write down what the good ones had in common: size, need, budget, skills, timing.
  3. Write down why the bad ones went wrong, in the customer’s words where you can.
  4. Turn each pattern into one plain sentence: “This is for…” and “This is not for…”.
  5. Add the reason and the alternative to each sentence.
  6. Ask a colleague who did not write it to read it and explain back who it suits. If they get it wrong, rewrite it.

The exercise often reveals that the team has different ideas about the ideal customer. That is useful in itself, because agreeing on the answer improves sales conversations, support and product decisions as well as the web page.

Keep it honest and supportable

A fit statement is a promise about what the reader will find, so it has to be true. Check each point against the product as it is today, not as you hope it will be next year. If a capability is limited, say how. If something depends on a plan, a platform or a setting, say so. Do not list competitors’ weaknesses unless you can support them, and avoid comparisons that you cannot verify.

Do not make new guarantees or commitments, such as response times, outcomes or refunds, unless they already appear in your terms. A fit statement should describe suitability, not add promises. Have someone who works with customers review it, because they know where expectations usually go wrong. Update it whenever the product, pricing or policies change, and record the date of the last review.

Marketing teams often resist writing “not for” statements because they fear losing sales. In practice, the people you exclude were unlikely to buy, or likely to be unhappy if they did. Support requests, refunds and poor reviews cost more than a lost enquiry. Readers also respond well to honesty, and it increases the credibility of the rest of the page.

Another worry is that the statement may be quoted out of context. That risk exists with any text, and clear writing reduces it. Keep each sentence self-contained, so that it still makes sense if it is quoted on its own. Avoid vague words like “usually” without a condition, and avoid negative statements that sound like insults. “Not designed for” and “better served by” are accurate and polite.

A fit statement only helps if the rest of the site agrees with it. Check the homepage, the pricing page, the FAQ, blog articles and your profiles on other sites for sentences that contradict it, such as claims that the product is for everyone. Conflicting descriptions make it harder for people and for AI assistants to know what is true. Pick one short description of the audience, use it as the reference, and align the others with it whenever you edit those pages.

Consistency and results

The results show up in the quality of enquiries more than in the quantity. Track whether the share of enquiries that match your target customer rises, whether pre-sales questions about suitability fall and whether refunds, cancellations and negative reviews citing wrong expectations decrease. You can also test your visibility in AI answers by asking assistants questions about your category and about your own name, and recording what they say about fit, before and after the change. Do this occasionally and keep notes, because answers vary between sessions.

How AI Blog Autopilot helps

AI Blog Autopilot writes SEO articles from your topics, with the audience and tone you set, so you can describe who your content is for. The product also states its own fit on its pages: it writes 2,000 to 3,000-word articles for a blog, and works without a website for social media only. Compare plans on the pricing page and choose the one that matches your needs.

The bottom line

A fit statement says who something is for, who it is not for and what to do instead. It gives readers and AI assistants clear, quotable text, filters out unsuitable enquiries and builds trust. Keep it factual and specific, put it near the top of the page, avoid new promises and review it whenever the product changes. Judge the result by better-matched customers, not by raw visits.

FAQ

Will saying who a product is not for reduce my sales?

It may reduce unsuitable enquiries, but those customers rarely buy or tend to be unhappy afterwards. Better-matched customers usually mean fewer refunds and complaints.

How long should a fit statement be?

Two to five sentences or a short list. It should be easy to read in ten seconds and to quote on its own.

Do AI assistants actually use fit statements?

They summarise what pages say, so clear text helps. Nobody can control the exact answer, so treat it as improving the odds of being described correctly.

Where should I put it on the page?

Near the top of the product or service page, under a clear heading, and repeat a short version in the FAQ.

Can I name competitors in a fit statement?

You can point to alternative types of solution. Only name competitors if you can support every statement, and avoid unverifiable comparisons.
